Get the Look: Channel Your Inner 1930’s

Debuting on Blu-ray & DVD on Nov. 1

Devastated by the sudden death of his parents at the height of The Depression, a young dreamer from the wrong side of the tracks, Jacob Jankowski (Pattinson), abandons his veterinary studies at

Cornell University. With no other family, no house, and no money, Jacob stows away on a train carrying the circus performers of The Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. Hired as a veterinarian to care for the troupe’s animals, Jacob is temporarily filled with the promise of an exciting life that comes with a traveling circus troupe especially when it came to the glamour.

The style of that era was unlike no other! When wanting to epitomize old school glamour, look no further than Reese Witherspoon’s character, Marlena, in Water for Elephants. With a wardrobe full of enviable clothes and accessories, our feature peppered with lavish costume stills, will delve right in to showcase some classic pieces that can be bought straight from the mall in order to replicate this desirable look. From fashionable silk scarves, elegant pencil skirts and cute berets – you’ll be channeling your inner 1930’s vixen in no time!

Pencil Skirts

A classic pencil skirt is an elegant must have for your wardrobe! You can wear a flattering pencil skirt for virtually any occasion, from traveling (like Marlena did) to dressing for the office. Try this Nanette Lepore pencil skirt from Neiman Marcus for some old school glamour.

Red Lipstick

One thing Witherspoon’s Marlena always had were her perfectly painted red lips. With the glamour of the 1930s, a bright red lipstick, like Avon’s “Perfect Red” shade, will give you that extra “wow” factor, and is just the beginning of an elegant transformation.

Silk Scarves

Marlena wore some beautiful silk scarves throughout the film, and you can capture that same look with a similar scarf from most any department store. The online retailer, Zappos, even created a silk scarf inspired by the one Witherspoon wore in the film!

Satin Dresses

For special occasions, Marlena loved to don a gorgeous satin gown, and you can do the same! For a luxurious night out, try this elegant gown (which looks like it was inspired by the glamour of the 1930s) from Overstock.com.

Berets

Adding an adorable beret to an outfit, like this white one from Nordstrom, will add a retro feel to any stylish ensemble. Pairing a beret with a classic top with some horizontal stripes, like Marlena did, will give you some instant 1930s-inspired glamour.
