Once fall arrives, it would be fair to say that parents have plenty of decisions to make about where to take their family. Over recent times Michigan has become one of the more popular destinations, with the area boasting hoards of forests, dunes, beaches and lakes. This makes it extremely appealing to everyone and bearing this in mind, we’ll now take a look at just how all of these issues make Michigan such a popular state at the current time.
The Great Lakes
One of the main things that has made Michigan so popular over recent times are the Great Lakes. The fact these span well over 3,200 miles around the state means that wherever you turn, there is a big chance that you’ll come across water of some kind. Of course, whenever this water does occur, you are also likely to come across glorious beaches and shores. In fact, it’s understood that over 100 beaches are dotted around the state and as any parent will tell you, this makes perfect reading for those looking for a family break.
Of course, every state boasts beaches and while Michigan may possess some special ones, they are probably not enough to entice people to the region. Instead, the main selling point has to be some of the specific lakes, with Michigan holding some of absolute beauty. For example, it’s not just Americans who will come over and view Lake Superior as this is regarded as the largest freshwater lake in the world. As you would expect, there are countless spectacles within Lake Superior and the fact that there is a specialist museum on the area speaks volumes about what one may find. There are also several other large lakes with the likes of Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Erie all being worthy of a mention. It would be fair to say that all of these boasts varying qualities, with some containing numerous islands while others are known solely for their size and beauty.
State Parks
As well as being one of the capitals for lakes in the United States, Michigan also boasts some fascinating state parks. Fortunately, a lot of these parks are situated close to the lakes and this means that it’s possible to mix trips together and visit several attractions across a short period of time.
Undoubtedly one of the most recommended state parks to visit is Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. This is the largest in the state and is situated very close to Lake Superior. In contrast to many other parks across the country, this one contains a bit of everything and families can take advantage of anything from waterfalls, to campsites, from forests to ski runs. There are of course other options and Tahquamenon Falls State Park is one of these. Admittedly, this is slightly smaller, yet its waterfalls are absolutely terrific and some have recorded a flow of over 50,000 gallons a second.
Summary on family trips to Michigan
Any family will openly admit that one of the most difficult decisions they face during the fall is booking an appropriate vacation. While the United States is home to one of the most wonderful destinations, it is remarkably challenging to find somewhere that appeal to everyone. Bearing this in mind, it’s no surprise to see that family trips through Michigan’s lakes and wilderness are proving more and more appealing. The fact that the region is blessed with such beautiful surroundings makes Michigan an obvious choice, while families can also take advantage of various activities that are set within these landscapes such as camping and skiing.
