It’s holiday time again and you’re starting to put together the activities you have always enjoyed as a family. But let’s face it; as enjoyable as they are, a day at the beach, picnic in the park or trip to the zoo are starting to get a little stale.
This year, why not look at something a little more ‘outside the norm’? Why not think outside the square and take the family on an activity you’ve never considered before? Here are five activity ideas for your family that might be thought of as ‘out there’ in some circles.
Have a Skateboard Day
Skateboarding as a leisure activity, a sport or a mode of transport has been around for generations. Chances are everyone in the family has been a skateboarder at one time or another. But it’s an activity that is never done together because most people tend to give it up as they get older. You’ll need a bit of equipment for this, so head over to the Penny Skateboards Europe website to check out what you need.
Out there Eating out
Eating out at a restaurant is a tried and true activity certain to bring the family together. But to make it just a bit more exciting, start looking for more exotic eateries to tease and tempt the taste buds. Look for a cuisine no one has tried before and maybe even do a little research into the restaurant’s country of origin. It’s a way to experience and learn new things at the same time.
Be a Volunteer
The family that helps together stays together. Helping others or contributing to your community is a great way to bring a family together and make you feel good about yourselves. Consult with a retirement home or animal rescue centre to see if there is anything you can do to help their organisations. Alternatively, some councils and community groups organise sessions to tend to local parks and other public spaces and welcome volunteers who freely give their time.
Extreme Horse Riding
Horseback riding is always a good family activity, but why not take it to the next level and camp out in the wild. Many horse ranches have weekend packages where you can hire a horse and, with a guide, go into uncharted territory for the ultimate adventure. Ride during the day and spend the night as a family around the campfire. Both fun and relaxing.
Become an amateur archaeologist
The world is full of weird and wonderful things that are begging to be rediscovered. Petrified word, unique and beautiful rocks and old animal skeletons are just a few of the things lying forgotten but waiting to be rediscovered. Do a bit of research on your local area and make a list of what you might find and where. All that is left to do is unearth them. Alternatively, many museums run sessions and hands-on activities for amateur archaeologist. If your family members have inquisitive minds, this might be the activity for you.
Family activities do not need to be staid and boring. A little thinking outside the square and you and your loved ones can work and have fun together in ways you might otherwise consider out of the norm. You are limited only by your imagination, so go for it.
