Achieving glowing skin all round can be quite the challenge. Our skin changes throughout our life and even if you’re blessed with good genes, your environment and what you eat or drink can affect the appearance of your skin. So how can we give our skin the best chance at looking glowy and healthy all year round? Well here is a handy guide that you can use the get the most out of your skin.
Learn About Your Skin
Just like anything in life, learning about your skin will help find the right products or take the right steps needed to help your skin throughout the seasons. Skin can obviously change over the course of your life but there are five main skin types:
Normal – When it comes to normal skin, you wouldn’t describe your skin as being too to warrant another skin type. Pores will usually be small and not easily visible. There’s not as much shine to the skin and won’t be cracked or flaky. Normal skin doesn’t have too many fine lines or wrinkles and the skin’s surface will usually be even.
Normal skin isn’t perfect and those with this skin type will sometimes suffer with the occasional breakout and those with a normal skin type can easily change due to many different factors. Using products that aren’t too greasy or will dry out the skin too much. With a normal skin type though, managing your skin will be a lot less hassle and easier.
Sensitive – Those will sensitive skin will often suffer from inflammation of the skin and is easily aggravated by beauty products and the environment. Sensitive skin types will also exhibit signs of dry, oily or combination skin. If you have sensitive skin, avoiding anything that has a harsh chemical base. Sensitivity can also vary and some skin inflammations can be worse than others.
Oily – With oily skin, it comes as a result of genetics and hormones. Active oil glands that produce a higher amount of sebum than normal give that almost sweat-like appearance. When there’s excess oil, it can cause the skin’s pores to expand and results in blockages. This is what leads to pimples and other acne blemishes. This skin type can often suffer from the skin looking greasy and can be a struggle when it comes keeping makeup on.
Those suffering from oily skin will often run to the nearest product that promises to dry out the skin, but this can have the opposite effect and make it worse.
Dry – Lack of moisture in the skin is what causes dry skin, but like oily and sensitive skin, it can be hereditary. Sebum is responsible for providing moisture in the skin, so without it, this can cause the skin it’s dullness. So it’s important that for dry skin, you find a good moisturizer that will hydrate the skin and penetrate the deeper layers of the skin.
Combination – This can be the trickiest skin types as individuals of this skin type, have to combat a variety of combinations whether that’s dry and sensitive or oily in parts and dry in others. This can make finding the right products difficult and also costly if you have to use multiple ones to get the job done. For this one, sticking to natural ingredients and exfoliating is going to make the biggest difference.
Focus On Hydration
When it comes to our body, most of it is made up of water, so we certainly need it for our skin to look it’s best. Hydration gives the skin cell’s the opportunity to perform at it’s very best. As we get older the skin, like other parts of the body, finds it harder to retain moisture which can have a knock-on effect with our skin. It’s important to, therefore, drink plenty of water on the daily. It’s advised to have 1.5 liters of water per day, which seems like a lot but not so much if you spread it out over the course of the day.
Water can be a great medicine when you’re sick or low on energy and is a good all-round addition for you to get that glowing skin you so rightly deserve. So drink up!
Supplements For The Skin
Sometimes, what you eat and drink, might not be enough to help the skin. The beauty industry is one that has been booming for many years now, and when it comes to supplements, there’s plenty that benefits the skin. Supplements are great for those who don’t fancy going under the knife or have a fear of needles that stops them from having treatments like botox. With injectables, there is also often a lot of risks and possible side-effects that come as a result. With supplements, the risks are minimal, which makes for a more attractive option.
So how supplements benefit your skin can come in a variety of forms. Here are a few that can get you started if it’s something you’ve only just discovered yourself.
- Fish Oil – This contains essential fatty acids that are not only great for your health but is traditionally recommended if you want glowing skin. It supports your skin’s collagen growth and promotes the skin’s moisture.
- Vitamin A, C, D & E – Vitamins are great for the skin so any of these will contribute to your skin’s overall health. Vitamin D is something that we usually get through sunlight, but sometimes, if we live in a less warm and sunny climate, we can lack in Vitamin D. So, it’s important to substitute it for a supplement that will give you that vitamin and help with your skin’s radiance.
- Zinc – This can really help with clearing up the skin. It reduces the production of dihydrotestosterone which can clog up pores and cause inflammation in the skin. However, users are required to be cautious with the dosage as it can upset the stomach
A Good Skincare Routine
A skincare routine of some sort should be implemented from an early age, to thank your later selves. Sadly, time isn’t on our side, and therefore our skin is aging from the very beginning. You want to prevent the damage because after all, prevention is better than cure. You should always remove your makeup at the end of the day, taking care never to sleep in makeup as this can really have a dramatic effect on the skin if continued over time. Removing all the makeup and dirt at the end of the day gives your skin the best chance to recover and repair itself.
Use the right products on your skin to cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize the skin. Depending on your skin, exfoliation may need to happen once, twice or a few times per week and you may want to consider using a variation of beauty products to work on the skin throughout the day or overnight. Once you’ve developed a routine, it will be easier to stick to it.
Don’t Forget SPF
It’s easy to forget, and we can often avoid applying sunscreen, especially on days when we don’t think the sun is shining. However, UV rays can penetrate through clouds and damage your skin without you knowing. So it’s important to apply an SPF every day, preferably under makeup or as part of your daily skincare routine. On particularly sunny days, you’ll want to re-apply it throughout the day.
A lot of makeup now comes with SPF included so always opt for a foundation or BB cream that comes with SPF, so you save on money and on hassle when it comes to using just the one product instead of multiple.
Get A Good Night’s Sleep
Sleep is a wonderful thing, and it’s something we all need to function throughout our lives. Some need more than others, but when it comes to your skin, you need the right amount to help it look it’s best. Sleep is when your body recovers and repairs itself. Therefore, getting a good night’s sleep is going to make a difference in the skin. Lack of sleep can cause dullness and tiredness to the skin. Dark circles can form, and the eyes can often be red or puffy.
Try and get around 7-9 hours of rest per night and switch off all electronic devices before going to bed. Make your bedroom a relaxing sanctuary and get some blackout roman blinds or curtains or an eye mask, so you have an un-disrupted sleep. You’ll certainly notice the difference in your skin!
Ask The Professionals
Dermatologists are great professionals to use when it comes to your skin. They can give you plenty of handy advice on how to look after your skin, what’s best for it and how to avoid any serious skin conditions like skin cancer. Dermatologists needn’t cost the earth so ask around for recommendations.
Hopefully, this guide has helped you to understand your own skin and what you can do to give your skin the best chance at looking it’s best all year round.
