Cooking is not a requirement of being a wife and mom but a hobby in my home. There is truly something special about spending time with my children teaching them how to make meals that will eventually feed not only themselves but with luck, they own families as well. Both my sons and daughters enjoy time with mom and even dad in the kitchen. Family bonding at it’s very best from the prep to the table itself.
So forgive me if I get overly excited when I receive review items boasting to be a The Ultimate Cooking Surface and Revolutionary Stainless Nonstick Fry Pan. Seriously ultimate, fry and original Southern girl, are words that go hand in hand.
The Black Cube combines all the benefits of stainless steel and nonstick cookware in one lightweight 9.5″ skillet / fry pan. If you are fimilar with your kitchen gadgets you know that using metal utensils on nonstick surfaces is a no, no. However Frieling has created a pan to do just that. So no more wasting money on plastic pieces that burn or melt in the dishwasher. You can spring for the fancier and long lasting metal units without worry.
Even more importantly is that this pan can brown meats like your favorite stainless steel fry pan and yet still as easy to wash as those nonstick ones many of us reach for! How is all of this possible? Frieling stainless nonstick is a raised stainless steel pattern over a recessed layer of nonstick coating. This allows for browning on stainless steel without sticking and protects the nonstick coating when using metal utensils.
But does it really work? Yes, at least for the 3 times I have tried in the last week.
First with the typical fried egg which in my opinion is very important in a pan of this size and what it will mostly be used for in my home since we have too many people to use it for basic meals. The lightweight structure and handle length allows for easy flipping and keeping the yoke intact. Being stainless allows me to easily control the temperature keeping the egg from become burned on the edges.
Second was the basic chicken breast browning which went very well except for I ended up drying out the meat. I think in the case you are cooking for one or two people and go with this skillet for a browned meat like chicken, it is best to brown and then bake for better taste.
When using any fry pan as your main cooking pan, they can sometimes wear in places. In my experience, the first areas to start seeing flaws are the bottom of the skillet and the screws or attachment pieces that connect the handle to the skillet. After seeing how the Black Cube is created, I am confident that these areas will last longer than some of my previous pieces.
Third was a simple grill cheese which of course went perfectly as planned. Pans should be able to complete not only complicated meals without fail but also simple ones. Due to this experience I would say the Frieling 9.5″ Black Cube would be an excellent go-to selection for a college student or even a couple starting out. For larger families, this would make a good small fry pan and I would also opt for the two larger sizes in their collection the 11″ and 12.5″.
The Black Cube is built to last with its 3-ply construction and the high quality PFOA free nonstick layer. All pans work on any cooktop and are oven safe up to 450° F. For ultimate convenience they are also dishwasher safe.
One winner will receive a Frieling 9.5″ Black Cube Fry Pan.
