If you have a large family, you might have trouble making ends meet when it comes to shopping for groceries. I can’t say that I blame you. After all, it can be hard knowing how to save the most money even when you have a small family. If you’re curious, I’d like to talk to you about how to feed your large family for only three hundred dollars a month. Let me know in the comments if I left out any tips or tricks that may be helpful.
Use coupons
Did you know that most coupons are for more than one item? It’s true! Take a good look at the coupons you’re clipping and make a note of any of them that require you to purchase more than one item. Just make sure you’re purchasing things that can be used in multiple recipes. Sour cream is often on sale and can be used in a lot of different recipes! For instance, you can use it in casseroles, on tacos, or to top your baked potatoes! Try and use those coupons to score on items that work for most occasions.
Have a menu plan
Having a rotating menu plan will make your life a lot easier. Are their specific meals that your family loves to eat? For instance, spaghetti night is a super cheap way to fill those bellies and save a lot of money in the process. Make sure you’re picking meals that not only have a lot of bang for their buck but that your family will actually eat. When you think about it, if your family isn’t eating the food that you purchase, you’re really just wasting your money. Am I right? Hopefully, you’re shaking your head “yes” right now.
Buy in bulk
After you’ve found those items that you’ll need to have in your pantry or fridge regularly, make sure you’re buying them in bulk. Buying in bulk is a great way to cut down your expenses. If you have a large family and only want to spend around three hundred dollars per shopping trip (or per month), then you really need to consider buying all of your dry goods in bulk. Try shopping for things like pasta, beans, flour, and rice in bulk. You’ll definitely use these items, so why not save some money for yourself in the long run. Think about next month when you go shopping again. Chances are, you won’t have to buy those bulk items for a long time, and thus, you’re saving yourself a lot of money. I call that a win!
Purchase seasonally
Here’s the deal: if you purchase seasonally, you’ll get better prices. It can’t always be about what everyone in the house wants that week. If peaches are in season, but someone wants bananas, you’ll need to just go with the peaches to save the most cash. Make it a point to tell your family about how much better the in-season produce and other items are going to taste. You can get them all excited about the seasonal things, and none of the food will go wasted!
Use the weekly ads/shop sales
The weekly circulars are your best bet when you’re trying to save money at the grocery store. Before you make your grocery list, check out any sales that are going on in your area and any circulars they may have out. These sales and ads will give you a good idea of the kind of items you’ll want to purchase when you’re out. Sales should indeed dictate a lot of what you’re buying. Combine those sales with coupons, and you’ll be all good to go!
I’d love to hear from you about how you save money for your large family! Which of these tips do you find the most helpful?
