Minneapolis Foodie Musts: Hell’s Kitchen – In a downtown Minneapolis basement, lies a restaurant known for its damn good food. Hell’s Kitchen holds true to it’s name with goth style decor and creepy bathroom eyes that follow you from one place to another. Do not, I repeat, do not go to the restroom alone if you are afraid of zombies, the dead or spiders. Just kidding!
The atmosphere at Hell’s Kitchen is quiet yet the staff are friendly enough to even chat with my wild crew. Upon arriving with my family, they quickly sat us in a round booth, providing menus and tattoos for the kids. Our server encouraged them to use the glasses of water on the table to tattoo themselves as they pleased. She was amazingly kind, taking time to chat with my daughter and didn’t bat an eye over the insane questions about the place or the food.
One thing is for sure, Hell’s Kitchen offers a unique menu with American flavors sure to please the pallet. Anything you could imagine from Deviled Eggs to a BBQ Ribs. There is truly something for everyone. They even offer a decent size kid’s menu with Low’s beloved Mac & Cheese.
Can you say bacon? Well, Ms. Drama Queen who never smiles did so quickly for her chance to score a second Hell’s Kitchen Deviled Egg. That sassy sneak just wanted the goods!
Even though this was our first experience, I opted for the typical Greek salad with chicken. What I received was a plate pilled full of fresh greens, peppers, onions and chunks of delicious Feta. I have never seen a salad so well prepared. This is a definite must try for the healthy foodie.
Looking for some saucy BBQ options? They have you covered, smothered and spiced to a T! Just take a peek at the BBQ Half-Slab and BBQ Pork Nachos. Mouth watering yet? Well, it should be! The nachos just might have put a little devil fire in DD’s eyes.
In the end though, it was the Bison Burger that put Hell’s Kitchen at the top of our must eat when in Minneapolis list. This baby is big, juicy and just damn good! Upon inquiry, we were told that butter is mixed in with the Bison to give it that melt in your mouth texture.
I might have been just a bit jealous watching my daughter chow down. Still wondering if I should have plate traded playing the mom card. Nah, I would never do that, or would I?
Hell’s Kitchen is open for for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks 7 days a week, the restaurant/bar also offers free live music most evenings and during weekend brunch, plus our new late night music program featuring many local and national artists in the folk, americana, jazz and blues genres. Occasionally, we also may have a late night “rock-the-house” show from time to time Fridays and/or Saturdays til 2am. Leave the kids at home for this one though.
Owners Steve Meyer and Mitch Omer have been award-winning chefs in the Twin Cities for far longer than their patient wives want to admit. Rather than being “celebrity chefs” with fancy toques and pretentious “vertical” foods, these war horses and their rogue compadres are behind the stove working their asses off to bring you made-from-scratch meals. Almost everything at Hell’s Kitchen is homemade, including ketchup, mustard, tomato juice, iced tea, hot cocoa, and of course our raved-about peanut butter which we now send throughout the world. Even our bar gets in on the “made-from-scratch” action, offering beautiful Bloody Mary’s, locally crafted beers, and awesome cocktails created with house-infused liquors.
Like the website says, “No, this isn’t Denny’s with a $2.99 Grand Slam breakfast.” I like so many believe in the you get what you pay for. If you want processed, pre-made this is not the place for you. Now if you are searching for the perfect spot that offers a fresh taste beyond what you could make at home and staff that will wow you with their serve, Hell’s Kitchen is a bucket list add for sure.
