Hunter was so excited to see his first rocket ship in the sky this week. Unfortunately, on the first night when we were supposed to see the launch, in clear skies over NJ around 6:30pm, NASA scrubbed the launch of the rocket filled with supplies to replenish the International Space Station. The launch, postponed until the following night, did happen, but tragically exploded just a few seconds after takeoff. Thankfully, it was an unmanned ship, but needless to say, for the second night in a row, Hunter missed seeing the “wocket ship” in the sky. There will be plenty more launches from our area that will be visible if the skies are clear enough, so for the mean time, we are learning about outer space and rocket ships through Space Scouts, a subscription program where children receive a box of goodies, games, and learning materials each month to teach them about the solar system.
As soon as the package arrived at our door it was like Christmas for our toddler. He loves his “wocket ships” and he spotted the package with the rocket on it right away. Although the Space Scouts is probably a little old for my son, we wanted to give it a try (suggested ages are 6 and up), and although he may not be able to interact in all of the learning games in the package, he loves the concept and the toys!
You can choose from a monthly plan, 3 month plan, 6 month plan, or 1 year subscription. Your first box comes with a lunchbox to use as a backdrop for your learning experience, as well as a place to store the magnets that are included in each month; a poster of the solar system to map out what you learn each month; and a constellation card kit to collect and learn about the different constellations and how to recognize them in the sky.
Here is a list of what to expect each month from Space Scouts:
Your child’s adventure begins with:
- Introduction to the Space Scouts Program
- Space Scouts Lunchbox
- Space Scouts Solar System Poster
- Space Scouts Activity Sheet
- Space Scouts Sticker Scramble

- Space Scouts Constellation Card Startup Kit (cover & ring)
- Introduction to Space Scouts Constellation Cards
Each month your child will receive:
- Space Scouts Exploration Plan

- Space Scouts Sticker
- Space Scouts Activity Sheet
- Space Scouts Sticker Scramble
- Space Scouts Souvenir Toy
- Space Scouts Constellation Card
- Space Scouts Constellation Activity Sheet
Hunter immediately wanted the claw and the figurines. (Anything tool related is an instant hit with this kid! Did you see his Construction Themed birthday party?)
Next it was time to put his first stickers on the poster. The first stickers are the main “Space Scouts” Roxy and Jett. Now, with Hunter’s help, they are ready to explore outer space!
Hunter carries his lunchbox everywhere, and even tries to follow me to work some mornings. He makes sure to put his figurines and magnets back in the lunchbox when he is finished playing with them. I love that he even remembers his bionic claw! He loves reading the letter from Roxy and Jett and putting his stickers together in the puzzle provided. We have also been practicing finding the Big Dipper in the clear night sky. I can’t wait to teach him more of the constellations as they come! We are also working on the puzzles and games together and since he is a very quick learner, he is helping with more and more answers!
Hunter even asked to take his lunchbox trick or treating in his astronaut costume this year!
If you have a little guy or girl who is fascinated with the night sky or outer space, the Space Scouts subscription makes a great educational gift. If you have a younger child, or one who is more into animals, there is also an Animal Trackers Club. That will be on Hunter’s Christmas Wish List this year too!
