Remote controlled flying objects are just kinda a given when it comes to boy {and even some grown men}. From the novice to the enthusiast this is an ongoing hobby that has been around for years. When looking at the harder to buy for young man or even one who has not really asked for much, I suggest taking a peek Air Hogs. They offer a wide range of reasonably priced remote-controlled aircrafts to peek the interest of most young men.
Our most recent Air Hogs test session involved their newest product introduction, the Helix X4 Stunt, a high-performance, remote controlled, stunt quadcopter. Each package comes complete with a fully functional quadcopter and 2.4GHz radio controller. The unique gyro stabilization and four ducted fans displayed on each end allow the Helix X4 Stunt Quadcopter is maneuver through the air at surprisingly fast speeds with a great deal of control for the user.
It is said that you can perform 3 stunts with the push of a button; including a back flip, barrel roll and 180 flip. Okay, now here is where it gets tricky. I having less experience than a guy in this area crashed my X4 on more than one occasion. Perhaps from lack of having the outdoor air {after all it is snowing in Iowa} and perhaps from being just as my son says. a dumb girl. However on the second test run my husband was able to achieve all three after a few rounds. So yes, they can be done and flawlessly after learning the proper height and movement of the controller.
Having said that, I believe that put this unit in the 12+ age range as anything younger might not be able to grasp the correct form and hence break the toy all together. Now Helix X4 Stunt does feature what they like to call “crash-resistant materials” which protect the rotors and deliver durability on all parts concerned. After my handful of crashes, I can safely agree as the Quadcopter seems to be for the most part unharmed. We do have a few scuffs and one small little indenture, but all in all not so bad for a rough landing.
The Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt offers a 4 channel control that is 2.4GHz. The extra channels are always a plus with remote controlled vehicles and allows for proper control over the unit. All together the Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt comes complete with quadcopter, USB charger, controller and user guide. Read that guide people! It does require 8 AA batteries which are not included. So be prepared on Christmas morning.
