The Storm Runner Inspires Tween Reading

This post is sponsored by Disney Book Group; however, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

When did reading become more of a chore than a happy pastime to my children? I did all the things a good mom does. Provided a healthy dose of books through their childhood and read to them every night. During their elementary school years, we moved on to chapter books and they hung on to each new addition with glee. As soon as middle school came, that all changed. They seemed too focused on friends and technology to dive into the pages an imaginary world. I was stumped and lost in a sea of wanting them to return.

Then came Rick Riordan and the introduction of an exciting world filled with mythologies and prophecies. Once I convinced them to exchange their precious cellphones for an hour of reading each day, our shared love for the smell of a new book and the feeling of being swept into a magical land beyond our dreams returned.

My tweens found the excitement they were searching for in a new genre of ya reading. Books like The Storm Runner opened the door for a new chapter in their love for reading. Our discussions of what was going on deep in those pages brighten their faces once again. Making me want to know what will happen next. I was excited as they were.

Just like when my tweens were much younger, they passed The Storm Runner from one to another. Each saying how it was a great book and they wanted more from Rick Riordan. How could I deny the new found joy? Where we go next in our adventure, who knows. But I am excited to find out!

About The Storm Runner

How can one boy with a limp stop the Maya god of death, disaster, and darkness from destroying the world?

Zane has always enjoyed exploring the dormant volcano near his home in New Mexico, even though hiking it is challenging. He’d much rather hang out there with his dog, Rosie, than go to middle school, where kids call him Sir Limps a Lot, McGimpster, or Uno – for his one good leg.

What Zane doesn’t know is that the volcano is a gateway to another world and he is at the center of a powerful prophecy. A new girl at school, Brooks, informs him that he’s destined to release an evil god from the ancient Maya relic he is imprisoned in–unless she can find and remove it first. Together they return to the volcano, where all kinds of crazy happens. Brooks turns into a hawk, a demon attacks them in a cave, and Rosie gives her all while trying to protect Zane. When Zane decides to save his dog no matter the cost, he is thrust into an adventure full of surprising discoveries, dangerous secrets, and an all-out war between the gods, one of whom happens to be his father.

To survive, Zane will have to become the Storm Runner. But how can he run when he can’t even walk well without a cane?
